The Astronomical Clock at St. Mary’s Church – Rostock, Germany

Rostock Clock 1

St. Mary’s church has so many symbols that I literally could write dozens of blog posts about this church.  Interestingly enough, the variety of symbols is so unique that by being there you might think it is a few churches wrapped into one.  Ok, its time to talk about the most famous symbol in the church – The Astronomical Clock.

First lets briefly dig into the history that tells us something more about this clock.

“The astronomical clock was built in 1472 by Hans Düringer, a clockmaker from Nuremberg.  It consists of three partitions:

  • Top: Apostle-go-round giving an hourly performance of the apostles crossing before Jesus for a blessing before entry into eternal bliss, and the last, Judas, is shut out;
  • Middle: Clock with daily time, zodiac, moon phases, and month;
  • Bottom: Calendar, which is valid until 2017.

The medieval clock is the only one of its kind still in working condition with its original clockworks.” (1)

Also, its worth noting that in Gdańsk, Poland there is a ‘older sister’ of the astronomical clock in Rostock, Germany.  In 1463/70 the master craftsman Hans Düringer, who was taken from Toruń, Poland (place of birth of Mikołaj Kopernik – Copernicus) by the city council, built a monumental clock in the St. Mary’s in Gdańsk.

“They have the same dimensions and many other similar measures.  They have much in common concerning the iconographic and artistic composition.  There is no other representative pair of clock that looks as similar as the ones in Gdańsk and Rostock.  The differences of the Clock in Rostock are a result of the ambition of the responsibilities who wanted to surpass the composition of the Clock in Gdańsk.  This is shown by the additional ring made of carved month pictures on the clock disc. There is also a second ring of zodiac (next to the clock disc) in the area of the calendar.  In addition one can find sculptures of scholars in the spandrel of the area of the calendar which might be involved to remember the previous clock.” (2)

Regarding the zodiac signs, it is my personal opinion from what I have learned and long researched, our sky has changed its position because of the earth’s movement over many, many years.  Allow me to explain a fascinating example from my past.  As a teenager, I was fascinated by any and all documentaries and articles about the history of Egypt and the Pyramids.  One day I stumbled upon a very interesting documentary about the building of the pyramids.  It spoke about the little holes that go from one of the chambers inside the pyramid all the way to the outside of the pyramid.  The first answer was that these were used as ventilation shafts, but then my question was “For what?  Dead mummies?”.  Probably I wasn’t the only one who asked that question.  Their significance was discovered by Alexander Badawy in the 1960’s.  He created a theory that connects the pyramids with Orion’s constellation.  Orion’s belt is literally a mirror image of the pyramids in Giza.  Other cities like Abu-Ruwash and Zawyat-al-Aryan were made in the likeness of other stars.  They are in exact same position from each other and even the sizes are different to match the brightness of the stars.  Badawy had a great idea, by stating that each shaft might represent each star in the Orion constellation, and he was right.  The problem was that his theory was flawed until he dug deeper and stated that the sky must have shifted.  That is because when he tried to connect the positions of the sky with the position of the pyramids it didn’t match, and boy he was right again.  Badawy and his team then did a computer simulation of the sky more the 2500 years in the past, and everything in his idea aligned perfectly.

“With precession the stars appear lower in the sky as we travel back through time.  The position of the stars today are not the same as they were in the days of the ancient Egyptians.  This is due to precession.  The earth completes a rotation once every twenty four hours.  The poles of the earth themselves circulate in a wobble like motion.  The poles complete their “circle” once every twenty six thousand years.  This is similar to the behavior of a spinning top.  The effect of this precessional movement is that the height of stars arc through the sky changes with time.  The stars travel through the sky rising and setting like the sun.  The stars highest point in the nightly arc of the star is due south and its called its collination.  It is this “highest point” that changes due to precession.  The collination of the constellation Orion for example drops one degree per century as you go back in time.  In 12,000 AD Vega in the constellation of Lyra will mark the Pole.” (5)
Ancient Egyptians were highly spiritual; their architecture symbolic of their beliefs.  The stars were associated with Osiris, the god of death and underworld.
“They suggested that the north shaft of the Queens Chamber aligned with “Beta” (B) in Ursa Minor, while the south shaft is aligned with Sirius.  The constellation of Ursa Minor was only introduced in 600 BC.  The Ancient Egyptians considered Ursa Major and Minor to be part of Draco (known to the ancient Egyptians as the Hippo).  Draco was associated with the goddess Tawret (who took the form of a hippo).  Sirius was associated with Isis and known as the “Nile Star” because of its annual appearance at sunrise on the day of the summer solstice which heralded the inundation.  The southern shaft in the Kings Chamber reaches to the outer surface of the Pyramid and is thought to be aligned with the Orion´s belt.  Orion was associated with Osiris, and was also the god of the netherworld.  The northern shaft aligns with Thuban, in the constellation of Draco.  Nowadays, Polaris marks our celestial north pole, but at the time of the ancient pyramid builders the star closest to the pole was Thuban.  Thus it was of high astrological importance and considered to be a symbol of immortality (as it never left the night sky).
Badawy and Trimble concluded that the shafts were not astronomical sightlines, as is sometimes suggested (a view supported by the fact that the shafts are horizontal at their ends).  Instead the shafts allowed the kings soul to reunite with the stars.  This is in keeping with writings in the fifth dynasty pyramid texts which confirm that the king joins circumpolar stars which never rise or set.  They turn around the north celestial pole without ever dipping below the horizon.  The ancient Egyptians called them the “undying” stars and took comfort from their stability and endurance.” (4)
There is another amazing discovery that was made with matching the pyramids with Orion’s constellation.  The Nile river supposedly represented the Milky Way galaxy.
Orion and Pyramids
Astrological signs are determined by the position of the sun relative to certain constellations on a person’s day of birth.  The problem is, the positions were determined more than 2,000 years ago. Nowadays, the stars have shifted in the night sky so much that horoscope signs are nearly a month off.
“Here’s what astronomers know: The Earth is like a wobbly top.  As it rotates, its axis swings in a circle, pointing in different directions.  As the Earth’s position shifts, so does our perspective of the night sky. For example, Rao said, we take the North Star, Polaris, for granted. It’s the star most closely aligned with Earth’s North Pole.  But back when the pyramids were constructed, the star that aligned with the North Pole wasn’t Polaris at all: It was a star in the constellation Draco called Thuban.  In 12,000 years, Earth’s North Star will be Vega, the brightest star in the constellation Lyra.  The complete rotation takes 26,000 years, Rao said.” (6)
This list supposedly should have the “real” dates of astrological signs, according to astronomers:
 13 Zodiac signs 1

Capricorn: Jan. 20-Feb. 16.

Aquarius: Feb. 16-March 11.

Pisces: March 11-April 18.

Aries: April 18-May 13.

Taurus: May 13-June 21.

Gemini: June 21-July 20.

Cancer: July 20-Aug. 10.

Leo: Aug. 10-Sept. 16.

Virgo: Sept. 16-Oct. 30.

Libra: Oct. 30-Nov. 23.

Scorpio: Nov. 23-29.

Ophiuchus: Nov. 29-Dec. 17.

Sagittarius: Dec. 17-Jan. 20.

13 Zodiac signs 2

You might find interesting that there are 13 and not 12 signs of the zodiac listed above.  The list includes Ophiuchus, a formation the ancient Babylonians discarded because they wanted 12 star signs, and not 13.  This is yet another example of how astrologers cherry-picked and ignored the astronomical observations, according to Joe Rao –’s skywatching columnist and lecturer at New York’s Hayden Planetarium.

Since we know that astrologers are not following the ancient rules and are creating their own understanding, how can people trust any of this asa reliable source?  How is it possible that on our planet Earth there are more than 7 billion people and there are only 12 or 13 general types of character for all of them?  Are you kidding me?  This how shallow and mindless horoscopes are.  Before you judge me any further by me telling you all of this, just think about it for a second.  Your horoscope is telling you that you will experience exactly same day, week, month or a year as another 58,5 MILLION people.  You will experience the same life as millions of other people.  The fact that people spend their time, energy, and money on horoscopes is a big joke.  We all know how unique we are and how our lives and circumstances are not easily replicated.

Now, if you are a Christian and believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour and you agree that He is the true God, let’s find out what Bible (KJV) has to say about it.

Leviticus 19:26

“Ye shall not eat any thing with the blood: neither shall ye use enchantment, nor observe times.”

Leviticus 19:31

“Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God.”

Leviticus 20:6

“And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people.”

Deuteronomy 4:19

“And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the Lord thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven.”

Deuteronomy 17:2-5

2  If there be found among you, within any of thy gates which the Lord thy God giveth thee, man or woman, that hath wrought wickedness in the sight of the Lord thy God, in transgressing his covenant,  3  And hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, either the sun, or moon, or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded;  4  And it be told thee, and thou hast heard of it, and enquired diligently, and, behold, it be true, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought in Israel:  5  Then shalt thou bring forth that man or that woman, which have committed that wicked thing, unto thy gates, even that man or that woman, and shalt stone them with stones, till they die.”

Deuteronomy 18:10-14

10  There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,  11  Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.  12  For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee.  13  Thou shalt be perfect with the Lord thy God.  14  For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the Lord thy God hath not suffered thee so to do.”

2 Kings 21:6

“And he made his son pass through the fire, and observed times, and used enchantments, and dealt with familiar spirits and wizards: he wrought much wickedness in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger.”

2 Kings 23:5

“And he put down the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in the places round about Jerusalem; them also that burned incense unto Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the host of heaven.”

1 Chronicles 10:13-14

13  So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the Lord, even against the word of the Lord, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it;  14  And enquired not of the Lord: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse.”

Isaiah 8:19

“And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?”

Isaiah 42:8

“I am the Lord: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.”

Isaiah 47:13-14

13  Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee.  14  Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it.”

Jeremiah 10:2

“Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.”

Jeremiah 29:8

“For thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Let not your prophets and your diviners, that be in the midst of you, deceive you, neither hearken to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed.”

Ezekiel 13:3-10

3  Thus saith the Lord God; Woe unto the foolish prophets, that follow their own spirit, and have seen nothing!  4  O Israel, thy prophets are like the foxes in the deserts.  5  Ye have not gone up into the gaps, neither made up the hedge for the house of Israel to stand in the battle in the day of the Lord.  6  They have seen vanity and lying divination, saying, The Lord saith: and the Lord hath not sent them: and they have made others to hope that they would confirm the word.  7  Have ye not seen a vain vision, and have ye not spoken a lying divination, whereas ye say, The Lord saith it; albeit I have not spoken?  8  Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Because ye have spoken vanity, and seen lies, therefore, behold, I am against you, saith the Lord God.  9  And mine hand shall be upon the prophets that see vanity, and that divine lies: they shall not be in the assembly of my people, neither shall they be written in the writing of the house of Israel, neither shall they enter into the land of Israel; and ye shall know that I am the Lord God.  10  Because, even because they have seduced my people, saying, Peace; and there was no peace; and one built up a wall, and, lo, others daubed it with untempered mortar:”

Daniel 2:27

“Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said, The secret which the king hath demanded cannot the wise men, the astrologers, the magicians, the soothsayers, shew unto the king;”

Micah 5:12-13

12  And I will cut off witchcrafts out of thine hand; and thou shalt have no more soothsayers:  13  Thy graven images also will I cut off, and thy standing images out of the midst of thee; and thou shalt no more worship the work of thine hands.”

1 Timothy 4:1

“Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;”

Galatians 5:20-21

20  Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,  21  Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.”

1 John 4:1

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.”

Here’s one of my favorites regarding the zodiac symbols:

Ezekiel 8:8-13

8  Then said he unto me, Son of man, dig now in the wall: and when I had digged in the wall, behold a door.  9  And he said unto me, Go in, and behold the wicked abominations that they do here.  10  So I went in and saw; and behold every form of creeping things, and abominable beasts, and all the idols of the house of Israel, pourtrayed upon the wall round about.  11  And there stood before them seventy men of the ancients of the house of Israel, and in the midst of them stood Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan, with every man his censer in his hand; and a thick cloud of incense went up.  12  Then said he unto me, Son of man, hast thou seen what the ancients of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in the chambers of his imagery? for they say, The Lord seeth us not; the Lord hath forsaken the earth.  13  He said also unto me, Turn thee yet again, and thou shalt see greater abominations that they do.”
